摘要:Carbon fibre reinforced composites (FRC) find broad applications in aircraft, automobiles, ships, trains, infrastructures etc due to their superior mechanical properties. While the tensile strength of PAN-based carbon fibre typically ranges from 3.5 to 7 GPa, low inter-fiber bonding strength can cause splitting or delamination under certain operational conditions and compromise structural integrity. Unlike certain natural composite materials, A FRC has many fibres of several micrometers in diameter, but lacks inter-fibre reinforcing elements at micro or nano scale. This talk presents our recent research outcomes on grafting of carbon nanotubes (CNT) on carbon fibres (CF) and the associated multiscale functional composites. The talk covers the following: (a) a brief overview of on fibre reinforced composites and existing carbon fibre surface modification methods; (b) a low temperature chemical grafting method for connecting nano entities, such as CNT and graphene, and carbon fibre surface via chemical bonding; (c) experimental evidences demonstrating covalent bonding between CNT and CF; and (d) introduction of a novel twin fibre single lap test method and assessment of mechanical behaviours, including interfacial strength, in multiscale functional composites; and (e) measurement of super capacitance property.
个人简介: Dr Liyong Tong received his PhD in 1988 from Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics. He joined the University of Sydney in August 1995 as a senior lecturer, was promoted to associate professor in 2000 and became a full professor in the School of Aerospace, Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering at the University of Sydney in 2004. Prior to joining the University of Sydney, he was employed as a research engineer and then senior research engineer from 1992 to 1995 by the Cooperative Research Centre for Advanced Composite Structures Ltd in Australia. He also spent two years in Canada at the University of Victoria in BC as a postdoctoral researcher and at the National Research Council Canada in Ottawa as a guest researcher. His primary research interests consist of analysis, design and manufacturing of multi-scale composite and smart materials and structures with practical applications, structural joints and repairs including bonding, fastening, and prototyping and design optimization of composite and smart structures. His research was funded by government agencies and industries, e.g. ARC, DSTO, AOARD/AFOSR, CRC-ACS, Boeing and Airbus etc. He published over 250 journal articles, two research monographs and several edited volumes on composite structural joining and connections. Dr Tong has been active in collaborating with colleagues globally.
